In 2015 Work n Play Travel Co and group was created. The company was created with the motto: “Don’t just see the world, give back to it.” Work N Play Travel Group explores the world through a different lens by combining adventure with social responsibility some call “voluntourism.” A dual-purpose trip allows people to take a more in-depth cultural and humanitarian experience by donating various needed items and participating in various volunteer activities and projects.

Work N Play Co was created by Gentamu (Jenny) McKinney who goes by Jen for short. Being the daughter of the late Black Panther member and civil rights activist Gene Allen McKinney, Jen was born into politics, philanthropy, and volunteerism. Although somewhat shy and soft-spoken, she later began to follow in her father’s footsteps by letting her voice be heard to make changes not only within her community but the world. While already running Awareness After Dark, a nonprofit that specializes in mental health awareness; she decided to combine her love for adventure and giving back to those less fortunate with travel. By already having a nonprofit that focuses on health and social justice issues, partnering with other nonprofits around the world just came naturally.

After Hurricane Maria, Work N Play Co group visited Havana, Cuba where they gave back-to-school supplies and toiletries to the local schools and surrounding communities.

This past May while exploring Costa Rica, Work N Play Co partnered with a local nonprofit to bring art therapy to underserved children in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month. Art therapy improves and enhances the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of people of all ages. Recently the group just came back from an action packed 7-day tour of Thailand. While discovering the beautiful cities of Bangkok and Phuket, Work N Play Co members got to connect and play with the
wonderful children of Thailand.

Work N Play Co is “travel therapy” for your soul. By combining adventure with social responsibility, guests become not only more aware of global issues but involved in them and leave feeling connected and inspired. With Jen’s gentle, sweet spirit and passion for helping others she brings life, joy, and laughter to her guests and those around the world who are less fortunate. You will see why some call her the Travel Therapist.
